Bio

Dr. Sejong Bae is a highly accomplished biostatistician and researcher with over two decades of experience in clinical, translational, and population-based research. Currently, he serves as the inaugural chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Data Science, and Epidemiology at »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ's School of Public Health, following significant academic and leadership roles, including a professorship at UAB Heersink School of Medicine and leadership of their Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Group for O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Bae's extensive research interests encompass cancer, cardiovascular diseases, other chronic diseases, health equity, clinical trials, and advanced biostatistics methods, as reflected in his impressive publication record, which includes over 230 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 11,000 citations. He is highly involved in scientific review, having served on over 100 panels for organizations such as the NIH, DOD, VA, and PCORI. Additionally, he is a member or chair of several data and safety monitoring boards (DSMBs, DSMCs, and OSMBs).

Teaching Interests

As Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics, Data Science, and Epidemiology at »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ, I am deeply committed to advancing public health through rigorous quantitative education. My teaching interests span biostatistics, statistical computing, and epidemiologic methods, with a focus on real-world applications in clinical and population health research. I aim to cultivate analytical thinking and data literacy among students, preparing them to address complex health challenges. Drawing on decades of experience across academic medicine and public health, I integrate interdisciplinary perspectives and foster collaborative learning environments that empower future leaders in health data science.

Research Interests

My research focuses on developing statistical and data science methodologies to improve cancer epidemiology, immunotherapy, and clinical trial design. I collaborate on studies involving immune signaling, DNA repair, and checkpoint responsiveness, integrating genomic and clinical data to build predictive models for precision medicine. I also contribute to data safety monitoring efforts, ensuring rigorous oversight and ethical integrity in clinical trials that advance public health outcomes.
