Dr. Kountakis is a Tenured Professor & Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck surgery the Service Chief of Otolaryngology-HNS at Wellstar MCG Medical Center. He currently serves on the Clinical Affairs Advisory Council, Wellstar MCG faculty physician clinical enterprise.

Dr. Stil Kountakis received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, Texas and his Medical Degree from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. He completed his otolaryngology residency at UT-Houston Medical School, Hermann Hospital,
MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital.  He moved to the Medical College of Georgia in 2003 from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, where he was director of the Division of Rhinology and Virginia Sinus Center.

Dr. Kountakis has served as President of the American Rhinologic Society and received the society’s 2015 Golden Head Mirror Teaching Award for teaching and for his contributions to the ARS, and the 2017 ARS Presidential Citation. He has served as Vice President of the Southern Section of the Triological Society, and as member of the Board of Directors and Past President of the Georgia Society of Otolaryngology-HNS. He received the Georgia Society’s 2015 Gerald S. Gussack Memorial Award for outstanding teaching in Otolaryngology. In 2020, He received the Distinguished Service Award of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, only presented to 433 members in its 126 year history. Dr. Kountakis is a member of the European Rhinologic Society and in 2021 he was honored with the society’s “Honorary Membership" in recognition of significant contribution to ERS and Rhinology in general. In November of 2022, He was also honored by the Hellenic Rhinologic Society by receiving the Society’s “Honoris Causa” award for his distinguished career and for his outstanding contributions to rhinology.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as Associate Editor of the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy and the International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology. Dr. Kountakis is Editor-in-Chief of the first “Encyclopedia of Otolaryngology-HNS” and has co-edited 4 additional textbooks, “The Frontal Sinus 1st and 2nd editions”, “Rhinologic and Sleep Apnea Surgical Techniques”, “Revision Sinus Surgery” and “ENT – Core Knowledge”.

Dr. Kountakis has published extensively, and his research interests include pathophysiology and pathogenesis of sinusitis and polyps, medical and surgical outcomes, and allergic fungal sinusitis. He is consistently ranked among America’s Best Doctors, Castle Connolly Top Doctors and in the Top Doctors category of the US News-World Report.
