PATH-5011: Basic Neuropathology

Enrollment:  2 Maximum
Prerequisites: Phase II

Goals:

  • Learn basic pathologic diagnostic approach through participation in the surgical and autopsy
    neuropathology service.
  • To successfully correlate pathologic diagnosis with clinical findings to help optimize therapeutic decision.

Objectives:

    • To achieve familiarity and basic understanding of pathologic changes involving common disease of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and skeletal muscle.
    • To develop basic concepts of diagnostic value of pathologic evaluation of CNS neoplasia, neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy resections, and autopsy neuropathology.
    • To develop basic concepts of clinico-pathologic correlation through close interaction with neuropathologist on daily sign-outs and attending conferences.
    • The potential exists for participation in research and publication.

Activities: 

    • Participate in routine microscopic sign out with faculty including biopsies and gross surgical neuropathology specimens.
    • Understand the importance of frozen section diagnosis during intraoperative consultations.
    • Participate in the brain cutting, didactic and case conferences, and neuro-oncology tumor board.
    • Assists house staff to obtain case related clinical data.
    • Review neuroanatomy and basic neuropathology, on discussions across the microscope, power-point lectures and recommended literature.

Lab Hours: 5-10 Hours weekly
Small Group: 2 weekly
Lecture Hours: 2 hours weekly 

Assessment:

  • Students will be evaluated based on attendance and participation in assigned activities as well as basic fund of knowledge with focus on pathologic diagnosis and clinical correlations.
  • Toward the end of the rotation, students are encouraged to give a 20-minute talk before the Anatomic pathology faculty and pathology residents on a topic of their interest and strength based on interesting case(s) encountered during this rotation.
