Series of speakers will lead up to 2024 Innovate student pitch competition

Since 1973, Sand Hills Literary Magazine has been committed to publishing the highest quality of student creative writing and visual art—including work by alumni and award-winning authors Louise Shivers and Judith Ortiz Cofer.
Starting in 2019, Sand Hills expanded to become a national print magazine, accepting submissions from emerging and established writers and artists across the country. The magazine has since published renowned writers such as Chelsea Dingman, Nina Schuyler, William Hawkins, and Benjamin Busch, as well as craft interviews with notable authors such as Alexander Chee, Michelle Harper, and Elissa Bassist.
Sand Hills also hosts an annual prose and poetry contest with prizes of $500. Past judges have included renowned writers Rebecca Makkai, Cinelle Barnes, and Ashley Jones.
The magazine is published once a year in the fall and is entirely designed and edited by students at »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ.

As Sand Hills continues to grow nationally, the journal remains committed to serving AU students through the popular, hands-on class ENGL 4670 Literary Editing and Publishing within the Department of English and World Languages.
ENGL 4670 Literary Editing and Publishing trains aspiring student-editors as they produce Sand Hills's latest issue. Enrolled students learn all facets of literary publishing from copyediting and design to budgeting and management. With these valuable skills, our students are well-positioned to compete for media and publishing jobs upon graduation.
Out students also have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership by representing Sand Hills and »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ at national creative writing conferences and festivals, most recently at the Association of Writing Programs in Baltimore, MD and the Decatur Book Festival. Many of our students also leverage this experience to attend highly competitive graduate programs not only in creative writing but also in law, historical preservation, and library science.
Although we are now a national magazine receiving hundreds of submissions each submission period, Sand Hills is proud to continue publishing many of our own AU students, alumni, and members of the talented Augusta arts community. Each fall, Sand Hills hosts an issue release party and fundraiser in tandem with a student-selected community partner. We have recently partnered with local nonprofits, SafeHomes of Augusta and the Sexual Assault Response Center (SARC) to help support the community and raise awareness.
Each year, the Creative Writing Program in the Department of English and World Languages brings prominent authors to campus for readings and discussion. Here are some video highlights.

»Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ's first executive leadership cohort is expected to complete the program in June.

"A comprehensive and ongoing policy process is a critical component of creating and supporting a culture of ethics and integrity, which reflects our mission and values," said Chris Melcher, vice president and general counsel for »Æ¹Ï¶ÌÊÓƵ.

Preventing the spread of COVID-19 makes it an unusual circumstance for coordinating volunteer efforts.
